Hazardous waste may have characteristics such as ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity, or toxicity. Some chemicals may also fall into listed waste categories. An item is not automatically safe for the trash simply because it is expired, unused, in a small bottle, or left over from a past experiment.

Every container deserves a careful review. A partly used reagent may have been mixed with another material. A sample bottle may contain residues that change its waste category. Unknown chemicals require added caution and may need characterization before transportation or disposal can be arranged.
During a waste review, do not overlook items that are easy to miss in cabinets, storage rooms, and equipment areas. Mercury-containing devices, fluorescent lamps, lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries, aerosol cans, solvent-contaminated wipes, electronic equipment, and “empty” containers with hazardous residue may all need separate management. When classification is unclear, we recommend involving your environmental health and safety staff or a qualified waste provider, especially because state and local requirements may add to federal rules.
Segregate and Label Every Waste Stream
Proper segregation prevents dangerous reactions and makes the disposal process far easier to manage. Materials that seem similar can be incompatible. Mixing the wrong wastes can create heat, pressure, toxic gases, or fire hazards.
Your team should keep incompatible materials apart from the start. For example, acids should be separated from bases, oxidizers from organic materials, and reactive chemicals from water sources. Halogenated and non-halogenated solvents may also need separate containers based on the requirements of the disposal facility. We never recommend assuming that materials can be mixed simply because both are headed for disposal.
Clear labels matter just as much as separation. Each container should identify the full chemical names and approximate concentrations of its contents. Avoid short forms, chemical formulas alone, or vague descriptions such as “waste solvent.” Labels may also need hazard information, accumulation dates, and generator or laboratory identification, depending on the waste and facility requirements.
Separate containers help your staff avoid confusion during daily work and make pickup preparation smoother. Use containers that are compatible with the waste, sized appropriately, and kept closed when waste is not being added. Universal waste, including lamps, batteries, and mercury-containing equipment, should be kept apart from hazardous chemical waste.
Store Waste Safely Until Pickup Day
Waste storage areas need routine attention. Even a properly identified container can become a problem if it leaks, corrodes, swells, loses its lid, or sits in an unsafe location. We recommend inspecting containers regularly and watching for changes that could signal a storage issue.
Good storage practices include:
- Keeping containers closed except when adding waste
- Avoiding overfilled containers and damaged lids
- Using secondary containment where a spill could occur
- Keeping waste away from floor drains, heat sources, and emergency exits
- Separating incompatible materials in designated areas
Many laboratories use satellite accumulation areas near the point where waste is generated, while others move materials into a central storage area managed by environmental health and safety personnel. The rules for storage time, quantity limits, labeling, inspections, and documentation can vary based on generator status, waste type, and state requirements. Your facility should confirm the standards that apply to its operations.
Staff training supports every other part of the program. Employees should know how to handle containers, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, respond to spills, recognize damaged packaging, and request a pickup when containers are ready. A fall cleanout can be especially helpful before year-end workloads and holiday staffing schedules make waste coordination harder.

Different materials may require treatment, recycling, incineration, or disposal through different channels. Hazardous materials can also require specific packaging, markings, labels, and shipping papers under Department of Transportation rules.
