What is Mercury and Its Dangers?

Mercury is a metal that when at room temperature becomes liquid. This liquid metal easily conducts electricity and will expand and contract evenly with temperature changes. Thousands of medical, agricultural, industrial, and household applications use mercury.

Elemental Mercury

Products containing mercury cannot be placed in regular trash because the mercury will not disappear. Mercury-containing products will break up and the mercury itself will then find its way into the environment. Elemental mercury and mercury products must be managed as hazardous waste.
